Butts Motors was founded by John Humphrey Butts and his son, J. Arch Butts, Sr., in Wichita, Kansas, in 1907 (one year before General Motors was founded). Beginning with the Buick franchise, Butts Motors grew quickly to include R.E.O. (later to become Oldsmobile), Cadillac, and Packard.
In 1955, J. Arch Butts, Jr., a third-generation dealer himself, moved Butts Motors from Wichita to Monterey, California, opening officially as Butts Pontiac Cadillac in 1956. Nine families moved with Mr. Butts from Wichita to continue working for Butts Motors, a statistic that will make the Butts family forever grateful.
Butts Motors remained in downtown Monterey until 1970, when J. Arch Butts, Jr. became the first automotive dealer to purchase land in the newly-developed Seaside Auto Center. Butts Motors remains on the same piece of land to this day.
Donald C. Butts, the son of J. Arch Butts, Jr., began working for his father in 1969 and is the current owner of Butts Motors. His son, Jake, began working for the family business in 2006, and is the Vice President.
In 2009, General Motors discontinued the Pontiac brand, and Butts Motors was able to replace it with the venerable Chevrolet franchise in the same year.
Today, Butts Chevrolet Cadillac is proud to serve its wonderful customers on the Monterey Peninsula, as well as those in Salinas, Watsonville, Gilroy, Santa Cruz, and beyond. Serving you for 107 years has been our pleasure, and we look forward to serving you for many more.
Thank you for your consideration.
